We were together 3 years before getting engaged.

For better or worse

I’d be the first to tell you that this isn’t at all what I planned. I always thought the engagement was supposed to be the drumroll to the wedding but the universe had different plans. The ink hadn’t dried on my Mr & Mr wedding planner before COVID-19 hit & it’s been the biggest test yet.

We were together 3 years before getting engaged. Most of which, we spent “shacking up” in a twin bed. Yes, I said a twin bed. Can you imagine? I know it sounds ridiculous but back then we thought that twin bed was the biggest obstacle we’d ever have to face. We were wrong. There is no such thing as a perfect engagement or even a perfect person. Every relationship faces hardship. It’s a given but during the hardships & failed plans I find solace in the fact that even now that we have a queen-sized bed, we still cuddle like we’re in that twin bed again.

About 3 years ago, I started dating the love of my life— for the second time.

Yes, we broke up before. Back then everything was so uncertain. We had been dating for 6-8 months, Miles was contemplating taking a job in San Francisco & I was workshopping a Broadway musical. He asked if I would go with him & I said no. At the time, even though I had feelings for him, I felt like I owed it to myself to stay in Chicago given that so many people sacrificed for me to get here & it was actually working out. I was working in professional theatre & making enough to pay my bills. It might not seem like a lot but to an artist, it is. When I told Miles this, he didn’t get upset. He listened & understood. After that, we went our separate ways. Gotcha— to all of the people who read this far expecting something salacious.

I continued to do production after production & finally ended up in a musical adaptation of Spoon River Anthology. You know I was the only single person in the ENTIRE cast? Seeing them really got me thinking about what I wanted out of life & if I was being honest, I wanted what they had. The second week of our show Miles made a surprise appearance. I was so happy to see him. He even took me to dinner after & we caught up on all we had missed, he informed me that he was no longer leaving & that he wanted to continue hanging out. The next week we went to the movies & we’ve been together ever since.
