Greenville County officials condemned homosexuality as incompatible with their community values Tuesday in a move that gay lifestyle supporters and others fear will set off a wave of intolerance and tarnish the area's image. Religious conservatives pressed County Council members to take the stand because of what they saw as pressure from organizers of the Olympic Games and national gay rights advocates to force communities to accept immoral behavior.
Supporters of the anti-gay resolution preached at the council meeting that God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve, and that the law of nature calls for males to mate with females. They yelled at their opponents that they would burn in hell and groaned when people said gays could be as religious as heterosexuals, while opponents described the council as Nazis engaged in gay-bashing.
