Elton John Calls Out the Vatican's Hypocrisy in Scathing Tweet

It's a little bit funny...

Elton John showed the world once again why he’s an icon in a tweet where he calls out the Vatican for their hypocrisy around same-sex marriage. Following an announcement from Pope Francis and the Vatican that the Catholic Church will not bless same-sex unions, John tweeted out a scathing call out of the church.

“How can the Vatican refuse to bless gay marriages because they 'are sin,' yet happily make a profit from investing millions in “Rocketman” - a film which celebrates my finding happiness from my marriage to David?? #hypocrisy,” the music icon tweeted today following the announcement.

In the statement, the Vatican said “it is not licit to impart a blessing on a relationship outside of marriage (i.e., outside the indissoluble union of a man and a woman open in itself to the transmission of life), as is the case of the unions between persons of the same sex.” They reference “homosexual inclinations” and say that they are against approving and encouraging “a choice and a way of life that cannot be recognized as objectively ordered to the revealed plans of God.” They say that God “does not and cannot bless sin.”

Obviously, John, who is a happily married man to his partner of nearly 30 years, David Furnish, had a problem with this. The Catholic Church was one of the investors in the film Rocketman, which celebrates John’s life, including his marriage to Furnish, and doesn’t shy away from showing his sexuality.

According to reports, the Vatican contributed £850,000 to the film, which includes gay sex scenes. That’s about three percent of the film’s budget.

If the Vatican is fine profiting off of gay marriage and gay sex in film, why aren’t they willing to acknowledge those relationships in real life? Elton John and the rest of us would like to know.
